I purchased my 1991 Peugeot 205 in Devon as a replacement for the SEAT Marbella which went to my brother. It seemed like a solid, simple and enough of a car to last a little while in my driving career. It was a possibility I might outgrow it, and over the years thoughts of moving on from it have indeed surfaced. But alas I still own it and often go abroad. In the last 6 months I have travelled 8k miles around and outside Europe.

Very little has gone wrong with this car over the years and not much work has been required to pass MOT’s. One of the first issues was the voltage amplifier on the distributor. It has electronic ignition and other than the amplifier it doesn’t have any electronic computers. It has a Solex carburettor that hasn’t caused me issue yet although the car does turn over for several seconds if the engine is already warm, before it actually fires.

It has had a fair bit of replacement items. It has a totally new braking system installed (rear drum system twice actually), new distributor, a new fuel tank after someone punctured it to steal fuel!, a new rear bumper after I reversed it into a lampost at speed, welding has been done to one of the front suspension turrets (the other might have to be done at some point), a new driver’s side window (winding mechanism collapsed due to rust) and various other items. It does contain a Digital car stereo that was given to me by my father which was bought second hand in 2006 for £100. I like having digital, and it can read MP3 format mix-CD’s, but it is before the advent of line-in and USB sourced music.

I sometimes visit the local scrap yard and buy little bits and bobs for things that wear out or break outright. The poor little 205 in the scrapyard has had me prize off it: Rear light lenses, front lamps, chrome bumper trim, seatbelts, gear knob, column stalks etc
